Providing safe and comfortable transit waiting and seating areas
is an important way to help transit users enjoy travel and encourage
ridership. Communities and/or transit operators can improve transit
stops by constructing well-lit bus shelters with benches to protect
riders during inclement weather and placing easy-to-read bus maps
and schedules at stops.
Communities may also construct special bus pickup and drop-off
turnouts that are separated from the main flow of traffic. Separated
bus turnouts can help to improve safety for all passengers, but
are particularly important for disabled and elderly passengers
and passengers who are loading or unloading bicycles.
In addition to making the transit pick-up and drop-off areas
as comfortable and safe as possible, transit planners should remember
that at the beginning and end of every transit trip is a pedestrian
or bicycle trip. Transit riders need to be able to easily and
safely access the transit services from their homes, park and
ride lots, and travel destinations. It is important to provide
adequate pedestrian and bicycle facilities at each transit stop.
