In order to reduce traffic congestion on major roads and improve
pedestrian and bicycle access along those major roads, communities
can promote multiple vehicle transportation routes through and
around an area.
By encouraging development of road networks that are neighborhood-scaled,
have high levels of connectivity and are composed of short blocks,
communities can take the pressure off of the larger roads, while
moving large volumes of traffic through a dense network of smaller
streets. This approach can provide alternate routes in case of
congestion or an accident, make the larger roads more pedestrian
friendly, and reduce delays associated with left turns at large
intersections on major roads.
