By mapping future facility requirements, such as streets, highways,
parks and drainage systems, municipalities can reserve land for
the future; without the consent of the municipality, the reserved
land may not be used for other purposes. It is a key tool to address
the issue of road access management, as well. Adoption of an official
map can be done as a stand-alone law, or can be incorporated into
zoning, site plan review, or subdivision regulations.
