Neighborhood Planning

The people who know the needs of a particular neighborhood best are usually the residents in the neighborhood itself. Communities and planners can work with neighborhood residents to initiate efforts to improve the appearance, safety, and services of a neighborhood. By focusing efforts at the neighborhood-scale and moving away from a one-size-fits-all approach, a community can focus resources that are tailored toward the needs of specific neighborhoods. For example, neighborhood residents may notice important details, such as the need for streetlights on a particularly dark street.

A neighborhood-focused approach helps facilitate the creation and maintenance of distinctive neighborhoods with a unique sense of place, and enhances residents' sense of community and commitment to working to make their neighborhoods better places to live.
