In order to promote the health and safety of residents, current
New York State law requires municipalities to license automobile
junk yards and certain amounts of junk automobiles and automobile
parts stored on private property. Municipalities may enact stricter
regulations to control automobile junk yards than provided for
in state law.
A municipality may also choose to regulate "junk" items
beyond automobile junk yards, such as old appliances, household
waste, or uninhabitable mobile homes. A municipality may enact
junk yard regulations or incorporate siting of junk yards in its
zoning ordinance.
