Housing Codes

Housing codes are designed to keep neighborhoods in decent, safe and sanitary condition. Housing codes set the rules for basic upkeep and maintenance for decent housing and are designed to prevent or correct problems that may cause unsafe or unhealthy conditions. Unlike building codes which govern new construction or remodeling work, housing codes provide standards for maintenance, including, for example, maintenance rules regarding plumbing and electrical systems, floors and foundations, and light and ventilation. Housing codes are generally enforced by the community's building official. Enforcement of housing codes can be an effective tool to maintain a community's supply of housing, in general, and affordable housing, in particular.

One enforcement mechanism available to communities with a high proportion of substandard housing is to hire an attorney to ensure that housing and building codes are being enforced, and that illegal rental practices by landlords are being prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
