Making sure that flood maps are updated and accurate is an important
element in planning for and taking preventative measures against
flooding. The risks associated with floods typically increase
as open land is developed because the creation of impervious surfaces
(such as roads and rooftops) reduces infiltration of surface water
and increases the velocity and volume of water flows.
Communities can work with the Federal
Emergency Management Agency to update their flood maps to
reflect additional development in their watersheds since the flood
maps were last revised. With updated flood maps, communities can
avoid siting development in floodplains and exacerbating the magnitude
and impacts of flood events.
