Downtown Inventory

Completing a downtown inventory is an important first step in any downtown revitalization effort. An inventory establishes an understanding of the present condition of a downtown and provides an objective basis for formulating future goals for a downtown.

When preparing a downtown inventory, staff or community members may wish to trace the downtown's historical development; determine the downtown's role in the region; assess public facilities and services; evaluate the condition of existing buildings and the streetscape; and inventory the amount and type of retail, commercial, office and service space in the downtown. Surveys can be used in an inventory, as well, including walk-through surveys and public opinion surveys.
