To enhance their unique sense of place, communities and neighborhoods
can use visual cues to help visitors and residents distinguish
one area from another. Some subtle visual cues that can be used
are unique lightposts, street signs, street trees, complementary
awnings, or streets patterned using bricks or cobblestones. As
well as giving definition to neighborhoods, these cues act as
focal points that work to attract pedestrians, bicyclists and
drivers to commercial or entertainment activities.
