Since institutions of higher education often demand significant
resources from (and contribute significant resources to) the communities
in which they are situated, it is useful to make sure that local,
regional, and campus master plans are coordinated to the greatest
extent possible. Issues that are most impacted by student populations
and institutes are: transit, roads, bicycle and pedestrian trails,
infrastructure planning, open space, housing, economic development,
and neighborhood quality.
Besides coordinating with colleges and universities, local governments
can create zoning districts, which are specifically designated
for higher education institutions, recognizing the important land
use role universities and colleges play.
