Architectural Design Control

Photo by Tompkins County Planning Department

One way a community can address the character of its built environment is by establishing an architectural review board to advise planning or town boards on the appropriateness of the architectural design of development proposals that they are reviewing. The review may include examining such design elements as façades, roof lines, windows, architectural detailing, materials and color. If the community is interested in historic preservation, an architectural review board could provide guidance on that issue, as well.
