Most agricultural economic development strategies are designed
to help producers increase revenues, but a few strategies help
them cut costs to support the economic viability of agricultural
lands. Local organizations can create programs focused on cutting
costs through innovative practices and strategies. For example,
using pasture-based management, dairy farmers have cut costs by
switching from growing and storing feed crops to grazing their
herds. Cooperatives can also be used to purchase seeds and other
agricultural supplies in bulk to reduce production costs.
