In this relatively new farmland protection technique, local governments
can enact an ordinance to require developers of agricultural land
to permanently protect one acre of agricultural land for every
acre of agricultural land they convert to other uses. Typically,
developers have the option of placing an agricultural conservation
easement on farmland within the proposed development area or in
another part of the municipality, or pay a fee to an agricultural
protection fund.
