Spring 2001 - a public meeting was held to present the results of the Vital Communities Initiative Workshops and the general principles used by workshop participants to draw future land use maps. At this meeting, Mayor William Johnson, Jr. of Rochester, NY presented information and lessons learned from Monroe County's neighborhood and regional planning efforts.

January 2001 - the second of two Vital Communities Initiative Workshops was hosted by the Planning Department. The purpose of the workshops was to ask interest groups to develop map-based visions of future development in Tompkins County for the year 2050. Participants at this workshop represented: youth, education, local elected officials, human resources, county elected officials, and representatives from the transportation and infrastructure sectors.

October 2000 - the County held its first Vital Communities Initiative Workshop. Participants included people interested in the environment, agriculture, economic development, land development, neighborhood quality, and local planning.
