Welcome to the Tompkins County Planning Department

The Tompkins County Planning Department provides planning and related services to County government and local municipalities. The Department is charged by the County Charter with preparing a comprehensive plan for the development of the county; collecting and distributing data and information on the County's population, land use, housing, environment, and community facilities; preparing planning studies and analyses; and acting as a resource for county agencies and communities seeking funding from sources other than County government. The Department's focus is on implementing the Tompkins County Comprehensive Plan and its priority action plan.

New web resource available in support of Tompkins County's EPA Climate Showcase Communities Grant.  Visit the Welcome Home website, www.community-that-works.org, to learn about local neighborhoods that are now serving as models of sustainable development. Through thoughtful housing and neighborhood design, these developments are demonstrating how American communities can become green, healthy, comfortable, and sustainable, while still remaining affordable.

Strategies Endorsed by Legislature -- On October 2, 2012, the Tompkins County Legislature endorsed two Strategy documents developed by Tompkins County Planning Department staff with input from the community and the Planning Advisory Board.  The Conservation Strategy advocates protection of Tompkins County’s natural and agricultural heritage through a comprehensive approach and coordinated partnerships. The Development Focus Areas Strategy identifies sixteen Development Focus Areas in the County that can and should support compact, mixed-use development.
