A permanent appointment is your goal

The advantage to permanent status is that:

• once permanent, you hold civil service rights to the position, and
• you become eligible for excellent fringe benefits and NYS retirement

The disadvantage is that:

• the process can be quite drawn out, typically five months from the posting of the announcement to appointment from the eligible list.
• it is a very competitive process. A large percentage of applicants are never hired.
