News Details - Two Seniors Honored at Annual Luncheon

The Tompkins County Office for the Aging Advisory Committee held the Annual Luncheon for 2010 at the Clarion Hotel on May 11th.

Karl Pillimer, PhD, Director for the Cornell Institute on Translational Research on Aging (CITRA) was the keynote speaker for the luncheon. His comments focused on the positive impact of older adults on environmental sustainability.

Two area seniors were also awarded certificates of appreciation for their contributions to our community.

Paul McGraw received the award for Senior Citizen of the Year. Paul has volunteered at Gadabout since 1993 as a driver and trainer. RSVP Chair of the Advisory Council, Roxann Buck reflected on the over 3000 hours of volunteer time that Paul has given to Gadabout. “As a driver, Paul transported seniors to medical appointments, work, shopping and other activities. The low cost transportation that he helped provide allows seniors mobility, access to services, and the ability to stay involved in their communities. This is truly a needed support services for seniors.”

Carina Emerson received the Award for Outstanding Contribution by a Senior Citizen. Carina has volunteered with the Groton American Legion Auxiliary Post 800 for 41 years. She has planned, prepared and served meals in their kitchen, consistently demonstrating her outstanding organizational skills and her ability to work well with others. Veteran’s Day Dinners, Tournament Dinners, Bereavement Luncheons, Chicken and Biscuit Dinners and various receptions and social events all went smoothly because of Carina’s time and energy.

Congratulations to both recipients!
