News Details - Opportunities to Serve on the Tompkins County Board of Health

The Tompkins County Board of Health (BOH) anticipates two vacancies beginning January 1, 2010.

- One vacancy is for a consumer (non-physician) seat. A consumer can be someone who has actually received Health Department Services or who is interested in public health activities.

- The other vacancy is for a physician. The physician must be licensed in New York State and reside in Tompkins County.

The BOH is a volunteer board that serves as the governing body for the Health Department. The eight board members each serve six-year terms. The Board meets on the second Tuesday of each month, beginning at noon at the Health Department offices, 401 Harris B. Dates Drive, Ithaca. The meetings usually last about one-and-a-half hours.

Under New York State Public Health Law, the BOH enacts regulations related to the preservation of life and health, and confirms the violation of orders and regulations. The Board also oversees the department budget and approves department policy and procedures.

To indicate interest in serving on the Board of Health, applicants must complete an Advisory Board Application form. The form may be picked up at the County Legislature office, located at the County Courthouse, 320 N. Tioga Street, Ithaca, and is available for download at http://www.tompkins-co.org/legislature/advisory/resume.pdf.

Once the application is submitted, the candidate must be approved by both the BOH and the County Legislature. Women and persons of color are encouraged to apply.

For more information on the Board of Health, please contact Alice Cole, Public Health Director, at 274-6674. To obtain an application form, contact the Legislature office at 274-5434.
