News Details - New York State’s Bottle Bill Expands
A message from the Tompkins County Solid Waste Management Division:
On October 31, the New York State 5 cent beverage container deposit law, known as the Bottle Bill was expanded to include water bottles. The following is additional information about this new legislation:
- All water bottles sold in New York State will now have a 5-cent deposit.- Deposit water bottles, like other New York State deposit bottles, can be brought to one of the many area redemption centers.
- The law applies to containers of less than 1 gallon or 3.75 liters of water, flavored water, and nutritionally enhanced water that contain zero grams of sugar.
Many individuals, homeowners, businesses and organizations already separate deposit bottles and cans for redemption. Share this information with your other family members, friends, and co-workers to ensure that water bottles are properly handled by sharing this information. Also consider how this may increase the volume of redeemable containers collected. Visit bottlebill.org/news/articles/2009/NY-10-28-DepositsOnBottled-pr.htm for more information.
The Mission of the Solid Waste Management Division is to manage the solid waste of Tompkins County in a manner that is environmentally sound, cost-effective, socially responsible and safe. This will be accomplished through coordinated administrative, operational, and educational projects in waste reduction, reuse, recycling, composting and disposal.
