Greg Stevenson was elected to the County Legislature in November 2005, and began serving in that capacity in December 2005 when he filled a vacancy created by an early-retiring Legislator. Stevenson has experience representing the residents and taxpayers of Enfield as a councilperson on the Enfield Town Board from 1998 to 2005 and Deputy Town Supervisor from 1998 to 2003. Representation of middle and working class families, as well as the county’s rural residents, is of significant importance to Stevenson. Keeping property taxes at a reasonable level is a priority, and Stevenson is proud of his record of never having supported a municipal budget with a tax increase higher than the cost-of-living increase.
Stevenson is a 20-year career firefighter with the City of Ithaca Fire Department and serves as vice-President of Local 737 of the International Association of Fire Fighters. He is also a member of the Enfield Volunteer Fire Company, where he was fire chief from 1999 to 2003. He is a 1995 graduate of Corning Community College with an Associates Degree in Fire Protection Technology.
Stevenson worked for Tompkins County starting in 1986, as a dispatcher in the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office and then the Fire & Disaster Coordinator’s Office. He remained a part-time dispatcher throughout the transition to consolidated 911 dispatch, now located at the County’s Emergency Response Center.
A lifelong resident of Tompkins County, Stevenson follows in the footsteps of his great-uncle S. Harvey Stevenson who sat on the Tompkins County Board of Supervisors from 1934 to1961, serving as chair from 1950 to 1961, and his great-grandfather Frank S. Stevenson who also served on the Tompkins County Board of Supervisors from 1918 to 1919. Stevenson and his wife Sherry reside in Enfield. |
