Prepared by the ITCTC
This year the Ithaca-Tompkins County Transportation Council
(ITCTC) analyzed traffic accident data for the first time.
The traffic accident data was downloaded for each municipality
from the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT)’s
ALIS database (Accident Location Information System) for the
years 2000 through 2010. This database utilizes all crashes
reported to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
NOTE: The ALIS database only includes crash data for ‘public’
roads and intersections. Therefore this analysis does not
include crash data for Cornell University and Ithaca College
– which are ‘private’ roads.

This document provides various accident and ticket data for
the county. Ticket data are presented for the years 2008-2010.
Four summary reports provide detailed accident data for the
three years 2008-2010. The four accident reports provide data
for 1) all accidents, 2) alcohol-related accidents, 3) speed-related
accidents, and 4) motorcycle accidents. Caution is advised
in interpreting the data in cases where the numbers are very
small. For assistance in using the data in this document or
to request additional information, please see the contact
information included at the beginning of the report.
Census
Transportation Planning Package (CTPP) Summary Sheets:
The source of this data is the CTPP based on 2006 - 2008 3-year
American Community Survey (ACS) Data. This data is designed
to help understand where people are commuting to and from,
how they get there, and how long it takes them to get there
- as well as providing characteristics such as age, poverty
status, and type of work. Data has been compiled for the following
(workplace) counties:
[Note: there is no data available for Schuyler County since
its population is less than 20,000 persons]

Traffic Count Report:This report includes AADT (Annual
Average Daily Traffic) and peak hour (5-6 PM) traffic count
information for the state, county and local roads in Tompkins
County for which traffic count data was obtained that year.
The National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) previously called
the Nationwide Personal Transportation Survey (NPTS) serves
as the nation's inventory of daily personal travel. It is
the only authoritative source of national data on daily trips
including purpose of the trip, means of transportation, how
long the trip took, day of the week and month, number of people
on the trip etc.
In 1995 and again in 2001, NYSDOT participated with the Federal
Highway Administration as one of several add-on areas. NYSDOT
purchased additional household samples to increase the coverage
and reliability of the NPTS data for analysis of the travel
patterns of residents within New York State.

In 2003, the Tompkins County Planning Department requested
and received a Special Tabulation from the U.S. Bureau of
the Census that provided separate sets of data for "college
students" and "non-college students" for Tompkins
County (by municipality).
