Religious Structures of Groton
St. Anthony’s Catholic Church was organized in 1870 by the Rev. Father Gilbert of Ithaca; the first meetings were held at the homes of John Carey and Matthew Walpole.
Father Gilbert purchased an acre of land on South Main Street for $400. Father P. F. Lynch oversaw construction of the first brick building in 1873 at a cost of $3,000. The South Main Street building was raised in the late 1970s. (Picture provided by St. Anthony’s Church Rectory Offices.)
