Religious Structures of Groton
Organized originally as the First Baptist Church of Locke on August 27, 1806 by a council of members from the First and Second Churches of Milton, First Church of Dryden and the First Church of Homer. After the organization of the Town of Groton, the name was changed to the First Baptist Society of Groton. The first building was constructed by Ebenezer Williams about 1819 at a cost of $450 and stood just south of the district schoolhouse. In 1834 an addition with a bell tower was added. This was the first bell in the town. In 1843 the society voted to build a new church on land bought from Jeremiah Platt, which was completed January 1, 1844. That first building was relocated on the west side of Main Street (#168) and is now the Town of Groton Historical Association’s Museum.
