Religious Structures of Groton
The Congregational Society was organized in the Methodist chapel on March 12, 1849. At this meeting it was resolved to build a church 40 x 55 feet and to employ Rev. H. A. Sackett as pastor at an annual salary of $200. This Victorian Gothic style building was designed by architect Lawrence B. Valk of New York City, completed at a cost of $3,000, and was dedicated in 1851. In 1966 the Baptist, Congregational, and Methodist groups merged utilizing the building now known as the Groton Community Church. The former Congregational Church building was then used as the Groton Community Center and is now privately owned and is located at 111 Church Street.
