First Methodist Episcopal Church of Etna
3 Upper Creek Road, Etna
This church organized in 1835 and held their meeting in the Etna village schoolhouse. In 1837 they built their church, Greek Revival style, at this site to seat 200 and at a cost of $2000. In 1878 that building was sold and removed, and the present building was constructed by the Methodist Episcopal Society in the Greek Revival style.By 1900, it had closed its doors and within a few years, the building was sold by the Methodist Conference to the local people on shares and was used by the community. The church bell was moved next door to the Baptist Church and the spire was removed in 1904.
In 1940, the building was turned over to the Dryden Central School district and was remodeled. By 1967, it was returned to the Etna Community Association and named Houtz Memorial Hall after Mr Houtz who left a trust fund for maintenance. Currently, half of the building is used by the Etna US Post Office and the other half is actively used by the Association for meetings and suppers, and it also houses their village of Etna historical collection.
