Finger Lakes Church of Christ
GJR Chapel, Rte 38, Freeville

Designed by RM Schell and built in 1900, with seating for 300, it is located on the lands of a small private educational school. The George Junior Republic was conceived by WR “Daddy” George in 1890 with a mission of saving and educating helpless NYC children and making them responsible citizens. The Shingle style building was first called The Chapel, then Christ Chapel. During the long years the GJR was active, it served the needs of all denominations, with services for Catholics and Protestants every week, and any other Minister, Priest or Rabbi whenever one wished.
When the school was changed to the George Agency, the Chapel was then rented to other denominations for their weekly services. Currently, it is the meeting place for the Finger Lakes Church of Christ. In 1991, it became eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
