Ellis Hollow Community Church
1768 Ellis Hollow Road, Ithaca

Before 1888, local people held services in the Ellis District Schoolhouse #10 with visiting ministers, usually only twice monthly. In 1895, the group decided to form The Ellis Methodist Episcopal Church, but kept on meeting in the little school, filling it to capacity. A building committee was formed, a corner lot from a family farm was given by the Ellis family for $1, and fund raising commenced. The steepled building and the Church sheds costing $1559.37 were completed in 1896. The Church was set afire by lightening hitting the steeple in 1951. The Dryden Fire Department saved the building and the steeple was rebuilt. In 1964, a foundation with full basement was built in back of the Church, and the building was then moved back further from the road to rest on the new base, which provided additional space. In 1993, the Church was designated a historic place in both the State and National Registers. The Ellis Hollow Church celebrated it’s 100th Anniversary in 1996 with 80 local and oldtime attendees. Then, in 2004, the little country Church closed the doors for the last time. Current owners are offering it for sale at $650,000.
