Religious Structures of Caroline

The Speedsville Methodist Episcopal Church was built in 1828 by the Presbyterian, Universalists and Methodists. All the lumber, nails and windows and other materials were donated by the townspeople. A steeple was added and a weather vane was placed on the top in 1895. In 1851 the Methodists built a church of their own next to the cemetery in Speedsville. The two churches shared the use of sheds erected to shield the horses from the weather while their masters were attending services. As services in those days tended to last at lot longer than present times, this was a necessity for the horses. The Methodist church was closed in 1945 and the lumber was used in the building of three houses in the area. Like most churches the number of attendees declined over the years. In 1890 the church had 162 members, in 1910 there were 79 members. The surviving church is currently used for a community center.
