Religious Structures of Caroline
St. John’s Episcopal Church in Speedsville was originally located in Richford in 1835. Services were held until 1842 when, due to a lack of interest in Richford, the church was moved to Speedsville. Local legend states that the bell rang all the way there. The church, listed on the National Historic Register, contains a large room that seats 60-75 people and a small vestry. The miniature stained glass window in the chancel was installed in 1885. An immense chandelier, consisting of 10 oil lamps was wired for electricity in the 1940’s when the church was redecorated. The electric organ was first played at the Good Friday service in 1950. In 1890 there were 22 registered members, declining to 8 in 1910. 10 – 12 people now attend weekly.
