Religious Structures of Caroline

The Dutch Reformed Church was located across from what is now Caroline Elementary school. Begun by Garrett Mandeville in 1810, the church was reported to have been built in 1820. It was incorporated as the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Caroline, N.Y. on September 17, 1860 with the Rev. John Whitbeck as minister and a number of men including Nathanial Tobey and Peter Lounsbery listed as deacons. The church and it’s parish house were next to the cemetery that remains. Revolutionary War soldiers James Personius, Benjamin Genung, James McMaster and John Crumb are buried there as are several soldiers who served in the war of 1812 and some from subsequent conflicts.
