The bridge program oversees construction, maintenance, and repair of 109 bridges on County, Town, and Village roads.  Major construction and design plans include:

Red Mill Road Bridge - Dryden - CLOSED
Newfield Depot Road Bridge - Newfield
Forest Home Drive Bridge - Town of Ithaca
West Seneca Road Bridge - near Trumansburg
Game Farm Road Bridge - near Varna
Freese Road Bridge - Hamlet of Varna

  • Newfield Depot Road Bridge over Cayuga Inlet, Town of Newfield.
    •
This project  will replace a 64-foot span, 24-foot wide concrete arch bridge in the Town of Newfield.  The bridge was built in 1931, and is adjacent to the railroad tracks, a DEC fishing access, and a residential neighborhood (trailer park) which generates significant pedestrian traffic.

Funding:  80% Federal; 15% NY State; 5% Tompkins County.

    Budgeted County Share:  $49,000

Status:  The County has requested State and Federal approval of design documents.

Schedule:  Final approval of design in early 2010.  Construction in summer 2010.

  • Red Mill Road Bridge over Fall Creek, Town of Dryden
    THIS BRIDGE IS CLOSED.

This project would build a bridge that is usable for heavy and emergency traffic on or near Red Mill Road, between Freeville and McLean, in the Town of Dryden.  The existing bridge on Red Mill Road is narrow and was posted for 5 tons prior to closure.  It is a 120-foot span truss that was built in 1887.  Lack of  funding and concerns of the State Historic Preservation Office have delayed construction.  The County is now investigating new funding options.

    Funding:  To be determined.

Budgeted County Share:  To be determined.

Status:  The bridge was closed on December 8, 2005, due to extensive deterioration.  County and Town of Dryden to strategize on resuming replacement design to position the project for alternate funding.  The preferred design would build a modern bridge at the existing location and relocate and restore the old bridge at a park in the Village of Freeville.

Schedule:  Select preferred alternative in 2010.
