Clinics FAQ
(Frequently Asked Questions)

Q: When will the Health Department hold flu clinics this year?

A: Clinics will be held starting October 22.

Q: Is December too late to get a flu vaccine shot?

A: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that while getting vaccinated in October and November is preferred, it is not too late to get vaccinated in December or January. During most years, influenza (flu) does not peak until February or later. So, you will be protected by the vaccination if you receive it in December.

Q: How long does it take for the flu shot to “start working”?

A: It takes about 2 weeks for the immunity to develop.

Q: Is there a flu vaccination shortage this year?

A: Current vaccine supplies are adequate.

Q: Do I need an appointment in order to get a flu shot at a health department clinic?

A: Yes, you must make an appointment. This is the 4th year of appointment-only flu shot clinics. People like knowing they do not have to wait in line for their flu shot, and that they can plan their day around that appointment.

Q: Can I make an appointment online?

Yes. Click Here for normal online scheduling options.

Please note that registration for the online service does not carry over from last year, so returning users must re-register.

Q: What if I don’t have a computer, don’t like using a computer to make appointments, or don’t have anyone to help me with using a computer.

A: We are aware that many people cannot or prefer not to use a computer to make their appointment. To make an appointment by phone, call the Health Department during these staff hours:

Days  Morning   Afternoon   Phone Number
Monday–Friday 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. 1:00 p.m.–3:30 p.m. 274-6609

Q: When will you start making appointments?

A: You can start making appointments now. Click here for complete info.

Q: Who is eligible to receive a flu shot from the health department this year?

A: Anyone 19 years of age and older is eligible to get a flu shot at a health department clinic. Make an appointment online or call 274-6609.

Any child or young person from age 6 months to 18 years, and their caregivers, may get a flu vaccine at the health department office, 401 Harris Dates Dr., Ithaca. Please call 274-6616 for an appointment.

Q: May I bring my grandchild or child to health department clinics?

A: Flu shots for children will not be provided at the clinics scheduled for adults. The Health Department will have separate hours for children to get a flu shot.

You may also make an appointment with your doctor for your child's flu shot.

Q: What is Guillian Barre Syndrome?

A: It is a rare syndrome that can occur following a viral infection. It causes temporary paralysis of one side of the body. Individuals who have had Guillian Barre syndrome should consult their physician regarding the risks and benefits of getting a flu shot.
