City of Ithaca Department of Planning & Development The City Department of Planning and Development provides planning services that promote timely and informed decisions on courses of action designed to further the social, economic, and environmental goals of the community. Cornell Lab. for Enviro. Applications of Remote Sensing The Cornell Laboratory for Environmental Applications of Remote Sensing promotes, facilitates, and conducts research and extension programs in remote sensing, geographic information systems, and resource inventories. CLEARS interacts with the Cornell community and local, state, national, and international agencies through cooperative research, consultations, support services, technology transfer, and instruction. CLEARS offers extensive air and spacecraft images of New York State, topographic and wetlands maps, Land Use and Natural Resource Inventory (LUNR) maps, and technical publications.
NRI, Inc. NRI develops natural resource databases for geographic information systems. The focus of the databases are soils and high resolution (1km2) climatic and weather forecast databases for any region of the world. As 1/3 owner of Sky Bit, Inc., NRI can offer a weather forecasting service to subscribers by e-mail and other electronic means. With access to satellite and other data, it is possible to automate and produce information for any location on earth. Existing maps allow the development of natural resource databases. A subscription service to deliver climate or high resolution weather data by electronic means is available. This service has been of particular interest to environmental modelers.
Tompkins County Planning Department The County Planning Department is comprised of several divisions: natural resource planning, comprehensive long range planning, local government planning, and economic development planning. The Department assists many citizen committees and task forces, and provides the public with maps and information on topics such as demographic trends, census data, flood zones, housing density, and natural resources. Tompkins County Soil & Water Conservation District The Soil and Water Conservation District provides technical assistance and education to county land users and governments to promote the wise use and conservation of soil, water, and related resources. Program areas include water quality protection, wetland investigations, permit applications, erosion and sediment control, agricultural waste management, stormwater management, critical area protection, stream-bank stabilization, house site evaluation, conservation education, annual seedling sales, and the Pond Stocking Program. The SWCD provides information on soils, topography, DEC wetlands, DEC protected streams, flood zones, and national wetlands inventory maps. Aerial photographs, soil conservation videos, and various educational materials are also available.
Town of Ithaca Planning Department The Town of Ithaca Planning Department coordinates a comprehensive planning program; provides support to Ithaca Town boards in environmental and development review; coordinates land use, transportation, environmental concerns with other governmental agencies; and provides technical assistance to individuals and organizations. The Planning Department provides technical assistance to the public and organizations, and helps applicants by offering expertise in the SEQR law. Base maps, aerial photographs, slide photos of open space, parks, environmental references, and publications are available at the office.
US Geological Survey The US Geological Survey’s Water Resource Division is involved with defining, cataloging, and compiling data related to the water resources of the United States. Co-op program where public organizations can match funds with USGS federal funds to help develop and assess supply, quality, and quantity of water resources.
