Required Training/Certification

Applicants for any of these positions should possess strong oral and written communication skills, a caring and demonstrated interest, and the ability to provide patient care support functions.

A car is a help for many of the home care positions, although some jobs may be in walking distance or on a bus route.

A. Personal Care Aide I - 40 Hours of training

B. Personal Care Aide II - 40 Hours of training

C. Home Health Aide - Dept. of Education Regulations - 95 hours
                                    Dept. of Health Regulations - 75 hours


D. Certified Nurse Aide - The nurse aide training program shall include classroom and clinical training which enhances both skills and knowledge and, when combined, shall be of at least 100-200 hours duration. The clinical training shall as a minimum include at least 30 hours of supervised practical experience in a nursing home.

E. Hospital Aide - Requirements will involve completion of high school, an ability to lift and move patients with assistance and many interpersonal skills.


Who Offers Training?

Many of the agencies that provide jobs also offer training for their positions.

In addition, T-S-T BOCES (the Tompkins-Seneca-Tioga Board of Cooperative Extension Services) is approved to offer training for Personal Care Aides, Home Health Aides and Certified Nurse Aides. For more information contact BOCES at 257-1551, ext. 336.


Help in Paying for Training

Often the training fee is covered by the agency.

Sometimes the Department of Social Services may cover any fee; check with your own caseworker.
