Association for Vision Rehabilitation and Employment

MISSION:   To assist people who are blind or visually impaired attain or maintain economic and personal independence.

ELIGIBILITY:   Persons who are legally blind in the New York Counties of Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Otsego, Tioga, and Tompkins are eligible for all services. Legally blind Pennsylvania residents are provided with information/referral and are eligible for employment in BWA industries. The agency has no age criteria and serves infants through the eldery.

SERVICES:

Children and Families - Children and families receive guidance in understanding and adjusting to vision disability. Techniques, tools, games, and methods are taught for enhancing the personal, social and educational development of the child.
Vision Rehabilitation Services - Through training in specific skills and other supports, people learn how to maintain the highest level of independence. Specific skills include orientation and mobility (negotiating environments), daily living and/or homemaking, communication techniques including Braille, and use of low vision aids. Counseling is provided to the family, in understanding the dynamics and implications of vision disability.
Employment - People who are blind or visually impaired have the opportunity to explore options, including training, referral for placement, work adjustment or employment in the industries division.
Low Vision Evaluations - Through referral to certified optometrists and case management, individuals can receive examinations to determine what low vision devices will assist the person to accomplish specific tasks. Training in the use of the devices is also provided.
Information and Referral - The agency provides a wide range of information and referral services on peer groups, related health issues, low vision assistance and adaptive equipment, and other helpful organizations (local, state, national, international). The agency provides speakers for community organizations and functions and actively seeks volunteers.

The agency works closely with many public and private organizations, notably the NYS Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped, schools, the Offices for the Aging, and local Lions Clubs.
