STOP-DWI is a New York state effort aimed at fighting driving while intoxicated (“DWI”). Funded entirely by fines imposed on convicted drunk drivers, STOP-DWI coordinates and funds anti-drinking and driving efforts throughout the state. Information about the statewide program can by found by clicking here.

In Tompkins County, STOP-DWI works closely with the eleven local police agencies to provide high visibility for anti-DWI efforts through dedicated DWI patrols and public activities. Equipment is purchased and provided to the agencies to aid in enforcement.

A large focus of the STOP-DWI program is community outreach. Television and newspaper ads, public speaking engagements and distribution of videos, written materials and posters are all currently being used as forms of reaching the public. STOP-DWI creates and supports prom and graduation anti-impairment campaigns for each of the local area high schools.

The STOP-DWI program currently funds a full-time position in the District Attorney's Office dedicated solely to processing incoming DWI files. Statistical data is obtained from each file and compiled to evaluate the trends and the effectiveness of the current course of action.

STOP-DWI participates in the Victim Impact Panel held three times per year. The Victim Impact Panel educates offenders on the consequences of drinking and driving. The members on the Panel are volunteers who speak to the DWI offenders revealing how their lives were forever changed by the actions of a drunk driver. For more information about the Victim Impact Panel, please contact Michael Herrling at the Tompkins County Probation Department at (607) 274-5380.
