RESTRICTING FIREARMS AND OTHER WEAPONS IN OR ON COUNTY BUILDINGS, WORKSITES, OR VEHICLES

Effective:        March 21, 1995                                                                                                  01-41

Objective:       To ensure the safety of County employees and other persons by limiting possession and use of certain weapons in County facilities.

Policy of the Board of Representatives:

1.         No person shall possess any of the following while in a building owned, leased, or operated by the County or at a worksite of the County, or in a vehicle owned or leased by the County:

a)         any rifle, shotgun, firearm, electronic dart gun, gravity knife, switchblade knife, pilum ballistic knife, cane sword, billy, blackjack, bludgeon, metal knuckles, chuka stick, sand bag, sandclub, wrist-brace type slingshot or slungshot, shirken or "Kung Fu star"; or

b)         any dagger, dangerous knife, dirk, razor, stiletto, imitation pistol, or any other dangerous deadly instrument or weapon.

2.         This policy does not apply to the Sheriff or any of his deputies or to any other persons specifically authorized by law to possess any of the above weapons on County property as part of his or her job duties.

3.         Any department head may grant special advance written permission to a person to possess a weapon in a County building which is under the supervision of such department head, if it is shown to be possessed for a legitimate purpose related to his or her job duties.  A copy of the written permission shall be forwarded by the department head to the Sheriff.

4.         Violation of this policy by a County employee shall subject the employee to discipline up to and including immediate suspension or discharge in accordance with County, union and Civil Service discipline and discharge procedures.
