Legal Assistance and Referral

The Tompkins County Office for the Aging works in conjunction with Tompkins-Tioga Neighborhood Legal Services to provide or arrange for free legal service to Tompkins County’s senior citizens age 60 or older. Priority is given to those persons with the greatest social or economic need or whose cases present crucial issues.

SERVICES

  • Referral and assistance in obtaining legal service
  • Individual legal counseling and representation
  • Educational/Informational programs

EXAMPLES OF LEGAL PROBLEMS GIVEN HIGH PRIORITY

  • Social Security issues - disability, SSI
  • Medicaid and Medicare appeals, public assistance, food stamps, HEAP, and other benefit programs
  • Evictions, to a limited extent and other landlord-tenant problems
  • Public benefit appeals if not provided elsewhere
  • Rights of nursing home residents

PROHIBITED (excluded by law)

  • Fee-generating cases
  • Criminal cases
