Avante Electronic Voting Machine

Survey 1: I liked the fact that the screen clearly directed you to check the written record (which the previous 2 vendors machines did not.)  However, the actual paper records have a dangerous problem-the discarded ballots can hardly be distinguished from the correct ballot.  Only a tiny number at the top shows the auditor which records must be stapled as duplicate form a single voter.  Also it would be easier to check paper record if it listed party affiliation as well as name of candidate.

Survey 2: I think voting on this machine will take more time than the machines we are presently using in New York state we’ll need to have a greater number of machines at each polling place to prevent long lines, delays and people leaving without voting.

Survey 3: Keyboard on screen difficult, standard keyboard would be better for write in.  Standard keyboard poorly placed.  Machine very slow in a busy polling place you would need more machines.  Print difficult to read ballot could be left displayed.

Survey 4: Very concerned about verifiable system with paper recount able ballot.

Survey 5: The cast ballot button is too close to other buttons.  If the machine were at wheelchair level a tall person could see in.

Survey 6: Arrived too late for service reviews.

Survey 7: $9000 very expensive

Survey 8: The procedure for changing a vote is somewhat straightforward for the voter, but would be a nightmare in the case of an audit or a recount, the original incorrect ballot looks just like a valid voter and would be identified only by a ballot with a duplicate number with a bracelet following it.

Survey 9: “Card” activation system is dreadful; it will be very easy for poll workers to accidentally run through “phony” voters by accident.  “Card” system was also not set up in paper election configuration.  Still better then Sequoia DRE.

Survey 10: If the “paper trail” has no correspondence with the ballot input on the screen, you have NO RECOURSE.  This way happen due to ballot programming error, it’s happened in every other D RE system (Avante is very interesting)

Survey 11: What happens when my vote is in route electronically to a central location?  Can I be sure it won’t be corrupted in any way?  How much doe these machines cost?  (vendor wouldn’t say)  It stores only up to 1000 paper ballots and time factors (ea voter needs several minutes)  Would prohibit only a few hundred.  It seems many machines would be needed cost?  The less technology, the safer, the more technology the more room for errors of all kinds.

Survey 12: the paper should have the title also, Republican plus the name.

Survey 13: I’m concerned about the ease of use of the polling officials cards and I do not like the format of the paper record.

Survey 14: I urge you to select paper ballots with optical scanners people will much computer cay that all of these can be tampered with.  The comparative expense is much greater for all of touch screen machines.

Survey 15: This machine was easy to understand, but I like the machines we currently use.

Survey 16: The small font on the paper ballot is hard to read.  The larger font needs to be used.  Concerned about whether what I see on the paper receipt is exactly as the vote was recorded.

Survey 17: Should have to cancel vote be fore making another one otherwise may make mistake by error.  Should have props visible before voting.

Survey 18: Paper backup easy to see but very busy printout might be difficult to count.  Ballot marker voice very mechanical.  Machine is heavy 250lbs with backup.  Card access is not dens able, cards revised could be just able to error or fraud.  Write in feature was good.  Vote for one change, choice was easy, propositions on right may lead to there being ignored by voters overall I would give it a B+ also I don’t like floating keyboards, appears through together, electric height adjustment is good feature.

Survey 19: Prefer liberty machine

Survey 20: Please select paper ballot optical scan system.

Survey 21: This depends on trusting what is inside the machine.  I do no behave that any DRE machine can be trusted because of the ease of tampering by people who know how.

Survey 22: Poorest of the 3 I have seen so far.

Survey 23: People who are not computer say will easily feel overwhelmed and confused.  What about COST?!?  Somebody hacking into central location without anybody knowing.

Survey 24: Easier than the other electronic machine.  Need Velcro on side of curtain.

Survey 25: I had to change my vote, the paper record was corrected, but how can I be sure it was also corrected in the record where did the original record go?  How can I be sure it does not accidentally counted instead of the replacement record?
